Medicare Pricing

The biggest question we get on Medicare Supplements is why the prices are so different if the coverage is the same. Each insurance company decides how to set the price (the premium) for its MediGap policies. There are generally three ways they determine rates:

  • Community-rated plans are also called “no-age-rated” plans
  • Issue-age-rated plans are also called “entry-age-rated” plans
  • Attained-age-rated plans don’t have another name to confuse you.

Here’s how they work. Your age is the primary factor that affects your premium. Other factors include your geographical rating, medical underwriting, and applied discounts. This chart really helps.
